REEF AWARDS $115,731 TO FUND 143 CLASSROOM GRANTS TO INNOVATIVE RUSD TEACHERS

In its biggest year ever since the Riverside Educational Enrichment Foundation (REEF) was launched in 1993, on Thursday, January 14, REEF will award $115,731 to 143 individual teachers or teacher teams to help bring creative and innovative learning to life in classrooms across Riverside Unified School District.

“At a time when the budget news from Sacramento just keeps getting worse for California school districts, we are able to offset some of the negative impact for our students by providing funding to keep programs and projects alive in our classrooms – programs that inspire students to experience the excitement of learning and enrich their educational experience,” said Steve Berry, REEF Chairman.

Programs supported by the 2010 REEF grants include virtually every curricular area and grade level, with grants to help all kinds of students from those with disabilities, to English Learners, to advanced placement students, to those in independent study programs. In addition to supporting classroom needs in the core curriculum, REEF grants will help fund physical fitness programs, garden projects and parent involvement activities.

Almost half of the REEF funding is targeted for visual and performing arts programs, thanks to a generous grant from the E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation. This is the second year REEF has been awarded a Carpenter Foundation grant to support arts programs in RUSD schools, resulting in a total of $105,000 in much-needed funding for music, drama, dance and visual arts programs.

Legendary Disney Imagineer Bob Gurr is the foundation’s honorary chairman. He will be present at the grant reception January 14th to hand out a grant funded by Robert H. Gurr and Nancy Gurr Johnston Fund, which was established in 2004 to support projects that excite middle school students about careers in the practical trades, mechanical, electrical, and electronic trades, theatrical and themed entertainment, audio and lighting.

The Susan J. Rainey Fund was established in 2008 in honor of RUSD’s ninth superintendent. This fund provides grants in support of instrumental music programs in RUSD schools. Last year, music students from John W. North High School were the beneficiaries, receiving funds to support the marching band’s trip to China. This year, Susan J. Rainey funds will benefit middle schoolers across the district, supporting the RUSD Middle School Honors Band presented by REEF.

Every project or program funded by a REEF grant is standards-based and addresses a significant need for RUSD students. Funds are raised each year through a combination of grants, sponsorships, an annual golf tournament, individual gifts, and RUSD’s employee contribution program, which provides about $24,000 in funding each year.

“At no other time in recent history has it been more important for communities to work together to support their public schools,” said Berry.

“We’d like to especially thank the RUSD employees who support REEF’s work in our schools with their monthly payroll deductions as well as REEF’s premier sponsors – Altura Credit Union, Tilden-Coil Constructors, Provident Bank, Student Transportation of America and Schools First Federal Credit Union – for their faithful support and commitment to our schools. With the ongoing fiscal crisis in California and the impact in schools throughout the state, educational foundations such as REEF will play an ever more important role in providing an excellent education for all students.”

Earthwatch Fellowships

At the reception on January 14th, REEF will also announce the fourth year of REEF Earthwatch Institute scientific research fellowships. This summer, REEF will send two RUSD teachers across the globe to participate in actual field research on the environmental challenges facing the world today. This opportunity is made possible by a generous Riverside family who wishes to remain anonymous and has for the past four years provided funding for two Earthwatch fellowships each year. Because REEF has had such strong applicants for these fellowships, Earthwatch has funded additional teachers and in the past three years, a total of 10 RUSD teachers have participated in Earthwatch fellowships. Summer 2010 will see that number rise to 12 teachers helping to make change in the world and bringing their experiences back to their classrooms to impact students in Riverside.

Amber Carrow, a teacher at Chemawa Middle School who participated last year in Earthwath’s Live from the Field program, was recently named one of five California State Teachers of the Year.

REEF’s 2009 Earthwatch teachers Yvonne Weinstein and Julianna Cruz will be recognized by Mayor Loveridge with a special proclamation to be presented at the February 2nd City Council meeting.

King High Engineering students tour Garner Holt Productions

"It's almost unbelievable the first time you see it, how much goes into a small piece," said Chris Hernandez, an 11th-grader after

seeing future animatronic figures for future Disneyland attractions.  Over 37 students, teacher Michael Martin, MLK principal Dan

Brooks along with REEF Chair Steve Berry and legendary imagineer Bob Gurr toured the facility on October 9, 2009.

"This has been the most awe inspiring visit for my students," said MLK teacher Michael Martin.  "The students saw the steps

from the creative inception of a character, to the development, construction, and the electronics---all in one visit," said Martin.

Bob Gurr, Reef's Honorary Chair, is one of the original imagineers.  He told the students he had only his innate curiosity when

Walt Disney hired him to design car bodies for the theme park and then expected him to design the mechanics.  He never said no to Disney and taught himself trigonometry to complete the projects. Bob went on to design the monorail, Mr. Lincoln, Autopia, the Matterhorn and many other iconic Disney attractions.

E. Rhoades and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation donates $55,000 to REEF

At the September 22, 2009 RUSD Board of Trustees meeting, Carpenter Company Division Manager Frank Vasicek presented a check from the foundation to Board President Kathy Allavie, Superintendent Rick Miller and REEF Chair Steve Berry.

These funds are designated to provide individual teacher grants in the visual and performing arts of up to $1,000 as well as larger grants up to $5,000 for grade level teachers teams or entire school arts programs.

"This year, REEF has raised a record $110,000 for RUSD classrooms through the Bonnie G. Polis Teaching Grants," said REEF Chair Steve Berry. "Special thanks to the E. Rhoades and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation, our sponsors, the participants in the 2009 REEF Golf Tournament, and the employees of RUSD for making this the best year ever!" said Berry.

(Riverside, Calif.) Jan. 10, 2008 - Altura Credit Union, the original schools' credit union, presented a check for $5,000 to Steve Berry, Chair of the Riverside Educational Enrichment Foundation (REEF) at "Good Morning Riverside," the monthly meeting of the Greater Riverside Chambers of Commerce.

Altura traditionally sponsors the first "Good Morning Riverside" meeting of the new year. As part of its sponsorship today, Altura hosted the award-winning Martin Luther King Jr. High School Marching Band, which performed for an enthusiastic audience of local business people.

Altura Credit Union is one of the founders of REEF, an all-volunteer non-profit organization dedicated to enriching educational opportunities for all to Riverside Unified School District students. RUSD teachers can apply for grants up to $1000 each through REEF that can be used for special student projects. The program is supported by a number of local businesses and individuals.

"We have a solid history of supporting education and in particular our local schools," pointed out Donna Michalka, vice president, Corporate Communications, Altura Credit Union. "Our annual sponsorship of the January Good Morning Riverside meeting gives us an opportunity to raise awareness of deserving local non-profit organizations. This year, we are so pleased to focus on REEF and its goal of assisting local students."

The locations for summer 2008's environmental field research are as follows:

Monitoring the Northern Fur Seal in the Bering Sea

The Pribilof Islands, Bering Sea, Alaska — The Pribilof Islands are a five-island volcanic archipelago in the Bering Sea, about 800 miles south-southwest of Anchorage, Alaska. Called the "Galapagos of the North," these islands support astonishingly high concentrations of marine mammals, seabirds, fish, and invertebrates, and are the world's principal breeding areas for red-legged kittiwakes and northern fur seals.

Over the past 30 years, two changes have taken place: the US pollock fishing industry has grown, and populations of harbor seals, Steller sea lions, and sea otters have collapsed. Northern fur seals are declining, now, too. Dr. Stephen Insley, Karin Holser (St. George Island Institute), and Bruce Robson (Community and Ecology Resources) are working closely with the Aleut community to gather information on the ecology and conservation of the northern fur seal.

Helping to monitor the Arctic vast stores of greenhouse gases

Mackenzie Mountain Barrens, Northern Canada — At 1700 meters, the Mackenzie Mountain Barrens in northern Canada is a breathtaking alpine landscape, bathed in more than 20 hours of arctic daylight during the summer, with the glacier-clad Keele Peak poking above the Continental Divide to the west.

Against this dramatic backdrop you will take measurements at study plots extending the plateau down to the valley bottom. You will use ground penetrating radar, microclimate dataloggers, and permafrost coring to measure the status of permafrost and organic carbon stores. You'll also sample trees and shrubs, collecting their growth rings to reconstruct past climate and monitoring plant development.

Access to research sites is first by four-wheel-drive vehicle, and then by foot. In your spare time, day hikes can bring you to landscapes as remote as any on Earth, where golden eagles and grey falcons soar and moose, elk, and caribou roam.

REEF Celebrates RUSD Teachers Return from Africa and South America
Gary Berz spends time with Africa's endangered black rhinos

Central teacher Gary Berz with a black rhino in Africa.
Saying it was a memorable summer would be an understatement. The opportunity to travel to Africa and be part of a dynamic research project (endangered black rhinos) was amazing. Working hands-on, in the field, with other professionals from a variety of disciplines, was invaluable in learning new research techniques and methods. The entire experience was incredible, but it's even that much more rewarding when I can share those experiences with my students, colleagues and friends.

Although the endangered black rhino was the emphasis of the research and field work, when you're working on the savannah or in the bush in East Africa, you learn more than you would have ever thought. The experience was a comprehensive one and I'm certain that my students will benefit from it as much as I have. I hope other educators will take advantage of the opportunities that REEF and RUSD have made available and I'd like to thank them for an incredible adventure.

REEF Board and Advisory Board members will be gathering at the Riverside Art Museum on November 14th from 5:30 p.m. until 7 p.m. to hear the tales from our EarthWatch Fellowship grantees.

It was a wild summer for three RUSD teachers who participated in exciting EarthWatch programs thanks to a Riverside family. Two of our teachers -- Jennine Barrett from Taft Elementary School and Gary Berz from Central Middle School -- traveled to Kenya with the organization thanks to grants they received from the Riverside Educational Enrichment Foundation (REEF). Dr. Trey Pitruzzello, who teaches at King High School, traveled to Brazil with EarthWatch. He grabbed EarthWatch's attention after applying for one of the REEF Fellowships. His trip was funded by the Helen and Peter Bing Foundation. Here's what these teachers had to say about their experiences:

Jennine Barrett hangs out with Kenya's forest monkeys

Taft Elementary School teacher Jennine Barrett (left) with her sister in Africa.

“How was your trip to Africa?” is a question I’ve been asked a lot lately. Let me tell you, it was “AWESOME!” Along with five other teachers, an Oxford student, and my sister from Alaska , I spent 9 of 11 days fully immersed in a study of Kenya's Forest Monkeys.

In teams of two, under the guidance of Earthwatch field researchers, we followed females through the forest collecting behavioral data for scientific research. It was hot, wet, and usually dirty work—but incredibly rewarding. It wasn’t all work, though. EarthWatch planned fun stuff for us, too. One afternoon, on the way back to Watamu from Gede, we explored a bat cave; another day, we shopped for souvenirs and had lunch at “I Love Pizza” in the town of Malindi.

There was also snorkeling and swimming in the Indian Ocean, a dancing/drumming session with the Giryama tribe, and a visit to Mida Creek Mangrove Forest. On our own, we all opted for a two-day safari to Tsavo East.

What a great adventure that was! Kenya is a beautiful place, and we met many beautiful people there. I miss it and hope to go back someday. But for now, there are over 500 photographs gracing my dining table waiting to tell my story.

Trey Pitruzzello makes friends with an anaconda in Brazil

Trey Pitruzzello holds a baby Caiman during his adventures in Brazil.
My trip to Brazil was absolutely fabulous. The weather was perfect. The work was hard and fulfilling. And the people were warm and gracious. Brazil is a wonderful place.

We spent our time cataloguing birds, snakes, lizards frogs, and insects. We worked from sunrise to sunset, but had a nice siesta break in the afternoon. Our principal investigators were researchers from Sao Paulo University. They quickly became our mentors and our friends. We found four new species of birds for the area! There were 10 in our group. Of particular note would be the day we caught a 3.4-meter long anaconda.

REEF Grants Announced

"This was our biggest and best year ever, REEF is definitely on a roll and the momentum is building," said Steve Berry, REEF Chair at the February 7th 2007 granting event held at Cal Baptist. Grants were awarded to 106 teachers totalling over $88,000.

"Another way we can see momentum building is through a growing community awareness of REEF which has led to some new community partnerships. Thanks to an anonymous Riverside donor, we have developed an exciting partnership with the Earthwatch Institute to send two RUSD teachers to Africa this summer on scientific research expeditions."

King High Remembers

Violet Cowden

REEF Supports "King High Remembers" Program

Seven decades of history came to life for more than 600 juniors who participated in the King High Remembers oral history project, which took place in the King High gymnasium. REEF is a proud longtime supporter of this award-winning program.

Students met with160 veterans who served in every branch of the military from World War II to present. This one-on-one interaction allows students learn from those who lived through historic events and to preserve their stories for generations to come.

Students Brittany Brubs and Ashley Ullrich, both 16, spent time with 90-year-old World War II veteran Violet Cowden. Violet was won of the well-known WASPS or Women Airfare Service Pilots. WASPS flew non-combat missions in the United States during the war, but were not classified as veterans until 1979.

Violet's eyes brightened as she told the girls about her missions, which included flying 19 different kinds of aircraft. Once, she was so busy that "for three days I didn't eat a meal in the same state."

Thank you to all of the veterans who make this experience possible by sharing their stories with another generation.
